• Faculty Introduction

Congratulations on entering this important new stage of your life. We sincerely welcome you to join the big family of the Department of Food Science at Tunghai University. College is an important stage for both personal growth and career development. Before high school, education follows a fixed framework and a limited scope of learning, with teachers closely supervising students. College removes these frameworks—learning has no upper limit and no fixed boundaries. It is therefore especially important to make the most of these four years, enriching both your life and your professional abilities while developing self-discipline, time management, and independent thinking skills.

"The Department of Food Science was founded in 1980. Over more than four decades of dedicated effort by faculty and students, the department has grown steadily and has cultivated talent in food technology and management, earning wide recognition across industry, government, and academia. This department is the only one in Taiwan that combines the fields of technology and management, also, is the first to establish a food safety cluster. Most full-time faculty members have studied abroad or hold doctoral degrees from leading universities, and nearly all have industry or practical experience, giving students diverse perspectives and career guidance. On the practical side, the department promotes directed research, hands-on lectures, summer internships, structured internships, overseas internships, and innovation projects. In particular, junior-year students undergo adaptive track planning, supported by internships and directed research. Through internships, students build professional skills and gain practical work experience: students take part in internship programs at domestic and international companies—either through summer internship programs or structured internships in their senior year—to facilitate their transition into the workplace. Directed research is carried out in faculty laboratories, allowing students to learn research methods and experimental techniques.

In addition, students will be encouraged to improve their foreign language skills and apply what they have learned to participate in domestic and foreign competitions and overseas exchange program. There will also be on-site teaching courses to equip students with a global perspective and international mobility.

Our department has undertaken the Ministry of Education Food Biotechnology and New Agriculture “Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talent Cultivation” program for many years, laying a solid foundation for students to further their studies and engage in various related jobs. This year, we also participated in the Ministry of Education's "Cross-field Talent Cultivation Program for Precision Health Industry". We hope that with the support of this program, we can add value to students' abilities, cooperate and connect with industries, and gradually build a system of smart food manufacturing production, food safety and supply chain. The food-related industries have continued to thrive despite the huge impact of this pandemic. We are earnestly looking forward to your joining, and hope that everyone can enter this treasure mountain to enjoy a fulfilling and rewarding journey here.
